The Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS recently reported that, "the scale of the HIV/AIDS epidemic now outstrips even the worst-case scenarios of a decade ago." In Sub-Saharan Africa, HIV/AIDS presents a severe development crisis. Over the course of 2001, there were approximately 3.5 million new infections in Sub-Saharan Africa, bringing the total for that region to 28.5 million people. By the end of 2001, fewer than 30,000 of these people are benefiting from anti-viral drugs.

The map above depicts the extent and intensity of the HIV/AIDS epidemic around the world. The colors – ranging from dark-red to dark-blue – show the number of persons – adults and children – per capita that were alive with HIV/AIDS at the end of 2001. Countries colored dark-red indicate relatively high percentages of persons living with HIV/AIDS per capita while dark-blue colored countries have relatively low per capita infection rates.Twenty-six of the thirty countries with the highest per capita HIV/AIDS infection rates are in Africa (see table below). The country with the highest score, Botswana, had 183 persons living with HIV/AIDS per 1,000 individuals followed by Zimbabwe with 132 and Swaziland with 118. The United States had 3.06 persons infected with HIV/AIDS per 1,000 individuals and was ranked 60th out of the 123 countries for which such information was available. Japan, Slovakia, and Svalbard, respectively, had the lowest incidence of HIV/AIDS cases per 1,000 individuals. The data for both the map and the table were obtained from the 2001 CIA World Factbook and are displayed using TerraViva! Global Data Viewer, a product from ISCIENCES, L.L.C. The World Factbook 2001 is a compendium of data, both statistical and textual, about the geography, economy, people, government and infrastructure of 267 countries, territories and oceans of the world.
