South America: Severe water deficits forecast São Paulo State

The forecast through December indicates that water deficits will diminish across the continent, though intense anomalies will persist in French Guiana, Suriname, Amapá and Pará, Brazil. Severe to extreme anomalies are forecast for São Paulo State. Anomalies elsewhere include deficits in Chile and north-central Venezuela, and surpluses in central Colombia, northern Peru, and Uruguay.

The forecast through August 2019 indicates that water deficits in Colombia, Venezuela, Guyana, and northwestern Brazil will downgrade considerably. However, severe to exceptional deficits are forecast for Suriname, French Guiana, and many regions of Brazil including Amapá, the southern Amazon Basin, and São Paulo State. Intense deficits will emerge tracing the Andes Mountains through Peru and into Chile. Surpluses will persist in central and eastern Paraguay and in northern Argentina.

Through January, water deficits of varying intensity are forecast across northwestern South America and will be extreme to exceptional in Amazonas and Rondônia, Brazil; southern Venezuela; southwestern Colombia; and a pocket surrounding Quito, Ecuador. Other areas of deficit include: from southern Peru past Santiago, Chile; from Cochabamba, Bolivia past the southern border; and central Mato Grosso, Brazil. Areas of surplus include: eastern Paraguay and across the borders into Argentina and Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil; Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; and northern Bolivia.

The extent of exceptional deficit will diminish considerably over the next few months. However, pockets are forecast in Amapá, Amazonas, Acre, Maranhão, Goiás, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, and São Paolo, Brazil; and, southeastern Venezuela, eastern Suriname, and French Guiana. Exceptional deficits in northeastern Argentina will downgrade to severe. Surpluses are forecast for northern Bolivia and eastern Paraguay. After June, moderate to severe deficits will continue to emerge across the northern bulk of the continent. Aforementioned deficits in Argentina will moderate.

Exceptional water deficits are forecast to diminish considerably in the coming months, but pockets are forecast through April in southern Venezuela, Amapá (Brazil), western Brazil, western Ecuador, and around the Gulf of Corcovado in southern Chile. Deficits are also forecast in southern Colombia, northern Peru, Uruguay, Rio Grande do Sul (Brazil), and northeastern Argentina. Surplus is forecast in northeastern Venezuela, scattered throughout eastern Brazil, northern Bolivia, and eastern Paraguay. After April, the extent of anomalous water conditions will shrink.
