The forecast for May 2025 expects significant water deficits for the 12-month period of February 2025 through January 2026 in northwestern and central Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Brazil, and northwestern to southeastern China. Areas expected to experience surplus include central and southern Africa, northeastern Australia, and portions of the Amazon rainforest.

The forecast indicates that while exceptional deficits will diminish in some portions of South America, they will remain widespread throughout much of the Amazon Rainforest. Deficits will similarly endure in eastern and southern regions of Brazil, as well as in parts of the Bolivarian Nations.

The forecast indicates that concentrations of severe to exceptional surplus will persist in regions of Kazakhstan and southwestern Russia, while exceptional deficits will linger in regions near Lake Baikal.

Many analyses reported in ISciences-authored blog posts are based on data generated by the ISciences Water Security Indicator Model (WSIM). Other sources, if used, are referenced in footnotes accompanying individual posts. WSIM is a validated capability that produces monthly reports on current and forecast global freshwater surpluses and deficits with lead times of 1-9 months at 0.25°x0.25° resolution.
