The 12-month forecast indicates widespread deficits across much of Mexico and Central America, mostly of mild to moderate intensity. However, intense surpluses are expected to emerge in the Caribbean.

Regions forecast to have significant water deficits for the 12-month period of February 2023 through January 2024 include the central and Southern Cone region of South America, much of Canada’s provinces, and various areas of Russia. Areas expected to experience surplus include the southwestern and western United States, and eastern South Asia. This Watch List is based on ISciences Water Security Indicator Model v2 (WSIMv2) 5 May 2023.
Global Precipitation & Temperature Outlook May 2023
Our May 2023 Global Precipitation and Temperature Outlook indicates that several regions of the world will experience significantly warmer temperatures than normal. Though the precipitation forecast has significantly more uncertainty (hashed areas) than we typically see, it generally anticipates mild anomalies overall.
