The forecast through February 2026 expects deficits in Central and Eastern Europe, Central Asia, and the Levant. Surpluses are expected in the western Amazon, the Sahel and southern Africa, and northeastern Australia.
Severe to exceptional surpluses will remain throughout Queensland. Exceptional deficits will occur in portions of Victoria, Western Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand.
Exceptional deficits will occur in northwestern and southeastern China, widespread throughout the Yangtze River Basin. Isolated pockets of surplus will affect portions of central and northeastern China.
Exceptional surpluses throughout Maritime Southeast Asia will mostly diminish, though pockets of severe to exceptional deficits will persist in portions of the Philippines, Indonesia, Papua, West Papua, and New Guinea.
Regions forecast to have significant water deficits for the 12-month period from July 2019 through June 2020 include: Canada, Brazil, French Guiana, Chile, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Ukraine, Egypt, Libya, United Arab Emirates, and Australia. Areas with a forecast of significant water surplus include: United States, Uruguay, Tanzania, Ireland, United Kingdom, India, Bangladesh, and China. The forecast through November indicates that widespread, intense water surpluses will persist in the region from southeastern Turkey and northern Syria through northern Iraq into northwestern Iran, and along the southeastern shore of the Caspian Sea and the Iran-Turkmen border. Exceptional deficits are forecast to emerge in a vast block of central Saudi Arabia.
The forecast through November indicates that water deficits in India will nearly disappear, as areas of deficit normalize or transition to surplus. Surpluses will persist in a vast stretch from Gujarat through Rajasthan, increasing in Madhya Pradesh. Surpluses are also forecast from Mumbai into Karnataka, and for central Uttar Pradesh. Southern India and Sri Lanka will transition from deficit to surplus. Widespread surpluses will persist in central Afghanistan.
The forecast through November indicates that water surpluses will intensify in the Northern European Plain in Russia. Surpluses are forecast for the Ob River Basin and along the Yenisei River, but intense deficits are expected in the eastern Yenisei Basin. In southern Turkmenistan intense surpluses are forecast; surpluses are also expected in Kyrgyzstan, western Tajikistan, and eastern Uzbekistan.
