The forecast for April 2024 expects significant water deficits for the 12-month period of January 2024 through December 2024 in South America, northeastern Africa, and the Middle East. Areas expected to experience surplus include eastern to eastern Africa, northern Australia, Europe, and Southeast Asia.

The forecast indicates that exceptional deficits will persist in northwestern regions of China, but lessen in size in northern and northeastern China. Surpluses occurring in Tibet are also expected to remain but diminish in size.

The forecast indicates that deficits will persist throughout Mainland Southeast Asia, but decrease in intensity, becoming mostly moderate to severe anomalies. Intense surplus is expected to expand throughout Maritime Southeast Asia, particularly in central Indonesia, Papua, and Papua New Guinea.

The forecast indicates that most exceptional deficits in Pakistan and Afghanistan will dissipate, though some regions are expected to experience lingering deficits. India is expected to observe widespread surplus throughout the country.

Middle East: Moderate to exceptional water deficits are forecast through Aug 2016, particularly March through May

Moderate to exceptional water deficits are forecast across much of the Middle East through August 2016. Widespread exceptional deficits on the Arabian Peninsula are forecast to diminish in severity December through February, but re-emerge March through May. Deficits in Turkey are forecast to spread to most of the country from December on, though surpluses are forecast to persist in the northeast. 

Middle East: Widespread water deficits predicted across the Arabian Peninsula and Iran

The forecast indicates a predominance of moderate to exceptional water deficits across much of the Middle East through July 2016. Though exceptional deficits on the Arabian Peninsula, in southern Iraq, and in southern Iran are expected to diminish in severity over the next several months, they may regain strength and spread throughout much of the Middle East thereafter. In Turkey, deficits in the west may persist, while surpluses in the east  may eventually transition to deficits.
