Our July 2022 Outlook indicates that temperatures will be exceptionally hotter than normal across vast extents of Brazil and China. Wetter than normal conditions are expected in Queensland, Australia, particularly in the northwest.

The forecast through August indicates that, while water surpluses will shrink and downgrade, many areas will persist, including exceptional surpluses in central Vietnam and Java. Areas of deficit include Medan, Sumatra, and New Guinea’s north coast.

The forecast through September indicates that water surpluses will shrink considerably in Southeast Asia and remain widespread elsewhere, persisting with intensity in the Lesser Sunda Islands. Deficits will emerge in western Thailand and pockets of western Cambodia.

Regions forecast to have significant water deficits for the 12-month period of December 2020 through November 2021 include: Brazil, Estonia, Latvia, and the U.S. Southwest. Areas with a forecast of significant water surplus include: Northeast China, Botswana, and the Philippines. This Watch List is based on ISciences Water Security Indicator Model v2 (WSIMv2) run on 5 March 2021.
