South America: Water deficits persist in the Amazon Basin, surpluses forecast in Venezuela’s Orinoco Basin

The forecast continues to indicate widespread and in many areas exceptional water deficits across northern South America, particularly in the Amazon Basin. Water surpluses are forecast May through July in Venezuela’s Orinoco and Caroni River Basins and in much of Guyana. Water surpluses will persist in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil; Uruguay; and central Argentina.

Regions likely to encounter significant water deficits in the coming months include: Southern California, northern Brazil, Zambia, South Africa, southern Namibia, Thailand, the Malay Peninsula, and the island of Timor. Water surpluses are forecast for: East Africa, northern Kazakhstan, Southeast China, western Borneo, and western Java. This watch list is based on ISciences' Water Security Indicator Model (WSIM) Global Water Monitor and Forecast issued 9 May 2016.

Zambia Hydropower at Risk

Zambia is forecast to experience continued severe and increasing loss of electricity generating capacity at least until December 2016, according to ISciences WSIM Electricity Assessment.  The WSIM Electricity Assessment is produced monthly and shows current and forecast estimated power losses globally for the next nine months.

Global Precipitation & Temperature Outlook for May 2016

The Outlook for May 2016 includes the forecast of exceptional precipitation in Venezuela's Orinoco watershed. Much hotter than average temperatures are forecast to dominate much of Southeast Asia and Indonesia, along with many other parts of the world.

Central Asia & Russia: Water surpluses forecast in central Kazakhstan, deficits in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan

Exceptional water surpluses are forecast in north central Kazakhstan and in central Russia from the Volga River through the Ural Mountains to the western edge of the Central Siberian Plateau. Water deficits are expected in Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, western Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.
