ISciences Worldwide Water Watch List February 2016

Regions likely to encounter significant water deficits in the coming months include: much of Canada, the Mississippi Valley, US; southern Mexico; northern Brazil; Mediterranean Europe; Finland and Estonia; North Africa, coastal West Africa, southern Africa; western Turkey; and Southeast Asia. Significant water surpluses are forecast for: the Southern Plains, US; central Argentina; Ireland and the United Kingdom; Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania; southeast India; central Russia; southeast China; and northwestern Australia. This watch list is based on ISciences' Water Security Indicator Model (WSIM) Global Water Monitor and Forecast issued 8 February 2016.

Global Precipitation & Temperature Outlook for February 2016

In February dry anomalies are forecast for northern Brazil, western Colombia, central Ecuador, Peru, Chile, the Middle East, and coastal West Africa. Precipitation surpluses are forecast from Ireland eastward through much of Russia. Warm anomalies are forecast across much of Europe, Russia and Indonesia, along with parts of Central and South America.

Australia: Exceptional drought forecast to persist in Tasmania, Victoria, southern South Australia, and from Perth southward; exceptional surpluses in the northwest

Through September 2016, the forecast indicates water surpluses in the north and along central rivers in Australia, with exceptional surpluses in northwest basins. Exceptional drought is forecast to persist in Tasmania, Victoria, southern South Australia, and from Perth southward.

Southeast Asia and the Pacific: Persistent, widespread, and severe deficits forecast in Southeast Asia, Sumatra, eastern Borneo, southern Philippines, and the island of New Guinea

Moderate to exceptional water deficits are forecast for many parts of Southeast Asia and the Pacific through September 2016. Deficits are expected to be most persistent, widespread, and severe in Southeast Asia, Sumatra, eastern Borneo, the southern Philippines, and the island of New Guinea.

 

South Asia: Water deficits expected in Southern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and portions of India; surpluses forecast in southeastern India, Sri Lanka, northeastern Afghanistan, and Nepal

The forecast through September 2016 indicates water deficits in southern Afghanistan, Pakistan, and portions of India, with many areas experiencing both deficits and surpluses. Surpluses are forecast in southeastern India, Sri Lanka, northeastern Afghanistan, and Nepal.
